You know that moment when you realize you'll never be young, blonde or thin enough to get what/who you wanted — that you never have been enough of those things?

It's back.

It comes with lots of internal dialogue, and none of it's nice.

It didn't take long for a Shittiest Day of the Year contender to show up.

- Cancer is a friend-thieving, home-wrecking bitch, and the world is a sadder place to be today.

- Working through the creeping crud just plain blows.

- Those weren't body aches; they were horrendous cramps.

- Exhausted + high on OTC cold meds = this will be an interesting night.

Today, I was called a carpetbagger in relation to a story I was writing.

Because, you know, growing up in Wyoming, graduating from the University of Wyoming and working in Wyoming for all but four years of my life makes me a wannabe Wyomingite.

Clearly.

I was so happy to see 2012 end, so intent on watching its exit from the world.

I had almost no feeling about the end of 2013. The turning of this year doesn't feel significant — not wonderful, not terrible. Perhaps 2013 was a recovery year after the hell of '12.

**

I'm so very tired of "new year, new you." It's all over my email inbox, all over ads and articles.

What the hell was wrong with old me?

What magical power lies in the chiming of a clock on a particular night to change people from the trollish creatures they were into the sparkling fairies we can now be?

At what point in the year does the "new" wear off? This is offered every year. Was I sold a faulty newness last year? I don't get it.

**

Sometimes the best thing about getting up and getting dressed in the morning is knowing I can take my horrible bra off at the end of the day.

Having to say goodbye (for real, this time) to my brother this morning sucked.

Getting treated to this view on my way back into town, however, did not suck.

So there's that.

This album reminds me why I like commercials.

Because they introduce me to new music (like when REI used We Are Augustines' "Chapel Song").

This album features the "Ends of the Earth" music featured in the latest Zales commercial.

That song is great.

The rest of the album is better.

You can buy or download it here.

I have watched (and Twitterized) today with evil glee as United Arilines' Twitter feed has been taken over by a canned, half-assed response to the kerfluffle they created when they BUMPED a 90-year-old Pearl Harbor survivor from an LAX-Honolulu flight.

They "proactively rebooked" him.

To effing MAUI.

On an AMERICAN AIRLINES  flight.

From there, Hawaiian Airlines gave him the literal first-class treatment he should have already been given when they flew him to Honolulu.

United Airlines utterly failed this week. Period. End of story.

American Airlines and Hawaiian Airlines upped the game and won The Interwebs.

And a World War II vet (finally) made it to the ceremony commemorating America's Day of Infamy, despite an airline's everlasting shame.
